Good day, membership. We had a bargaining session last night. We will be meeting again on Monday, February 3rd, 2025.
This session was our opportunity to present our counters to leadership’s proposals. We did go through our counter-proposals. Primarily we are asking for a two year contract instead of a three year contract. Our reasoning is that this is our first contract, we are new to this, and we don’t want something to create unintended consequences that we wouldn’t be able to change for three years. Two years for a first contract is reasonable.
We are holding back a couple of sections around severance as we want to be sure of the language we use. We added back our proposals for lactation protection and for creating a more permanent forum to bring issues to leadership. We are asking for a shorter probationary time (not the time you are guaranteed pay for those in whom this is relevant), longer time to retain seniority if we are not at Legacy, and clarification on language around management rights. Again, we are working through non-economic proposals though economics are tied into some of these areas. We have placed markers in those spots, essentially “to be negotiated later” when we do work on the economic proposals.
There was a heated discussion around policies, where to find them, and what they say. I don’t know about you, but when I try to find something on Sharepoint, including policies, I have a hard time finding them, assuming that I can find them in the first place. We want to be clear that if the contract cites a policy that we can all agree on what the policy is. We also think that Tony, the labor lawyer, was trying to test us. Your team did good and we showed we are not going to be pushed around. We also learnt from Julian that making policies at Legacy is not a straightforward, easy process. That was illuminating.
Next session we hope to hear back from leadership about some of the proposals. This back is forth is usual in negotiations. I will try to keep everyone updated.
